Looks like I'm a little late at jumping on this band wagon, (didn't realize the convo was going on)but it's something that grieves my heart often how some songs out there do indeed seem too commercial and in some ways even sexually provocative in the way they are sung to be considered a worship song. Thanks, Sky and Jen, for those comments! My wife always thinks I'm being too self-righteous, and believe me, I'm afraid sometimes I can fall into that. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who cringes at the commercialization of so many things that are called "Christian" these days.

I feel reluctant, sometimes, to say what I think because people are so quick to accuse one of judging. But remember, Paul said "Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life!" (1 Corinthians 6:3 ESV)

I really can understand where you are coming from on this issue. Frankly, I can have a real tendency to look at the Christian music industry and find much fault. However, I do think we have to be careful in this. Judge righteous judgment? Yes. But can we know each singer's heart? No.

I haven't heard every song that Selah has done, and I know that Nicole is on her own now and they have another female singer. I haven't actually heard any more than one of the songs with the new female singer, so I don't know anything about any techy stuff they might be doing with her voice, or if you meant that they did that with Nicole's voice. I think I heard one song where they altered Nicole's voice, and while it wasn't my cup of tea, I saw nothing ungodly about it. It sounded like she was singing through a tin can. I usually like the voices straight up. Sometimes I think there's an element of someone just having some fun with the editing equipment. Denny has some recording equipment and sometimes messes around with it.

The thing I'm seeing here is style. I also have a very expressive style when I sing that could potentially be misconstrued as performance. I am expressive from the sheer joy of singing. I seem to remember that Keith Green was very expressive, and at times even seemed to show a sense of humour within it. I don't see these things as performance, but simply matters of individual style. I am reminded of how David danced before the Lord. My understanding of this passage is that his heart was right, but apparently it didn't seem that way to an observer.

All that I'm saying is that I agree that there is much ungodliness going on in the Christian music business, but perhaps not all of it is. My focus in posting this was the lyrics of the first hymn. I couldn't post the lyrics without permission from the copyright owner, so I opted for the youtube video.

It's an encouragement to find others who also have a "check in the Spirit" when it comes to commercially produced music that proclaims Christ. I'm with NWProdigal, but I also do enjoy Selahs music, especially the scripture singing. On the other hand, they use technology to make the female vocalist sound exceedingly breathy....anybody else notice this? My husband doesn't like their music at all because of this. What would they say if you asked them why do they do that. hm.

I find myself aligning with Keith Green's revelations about all this......check out "No Compromise" it's an eye opening book.

Jen, it was way good to talk with you for a while yesterday. :) Nice surprise eh?

The rain continued and got harder, we ended up not doing the Pinery Park hallowe'en evening. Ah well. Justin never even noticed. he had too much fun making a tunnel out of mommy's shirt! :) the giggles were just too much. :)

No, actually, I wanted to post my regular text hymn with a link to Cyberhymnal, but Precious Lord, Take My Hand is still under copyright so I looked for versions of that hymn in particular on youtube. I like Nicole Sponberg's voice, and I posted this mainly because of the first hymn. However, it came as a medley. Package deal.

I agree with you about the way much of Christian music is done. I just wish I could have posted the lyrics to this hymn/song. It really touched me because lately I am tired, weak, and worn much of the time and must rely on Him to take my hand and lead me through.

I try to like these groups but they just come across as too commercial for me to get any real blessing from them. Too much emphasis on the singer/performance and not enough on the words...for me.
